Concerning the Cup

A Tradition Unbroken

Every spring, in the basement common room of Branford College, the table is set, the net is tensioned to regulation height, and the young men and women of Yale University are called to compete for the most storied trophy in all of collegiate table tennis.

The Cup does not reward the loudest. It does not reward the largest. It rewards precisely one thing: the player whose paddle answers when the moment demands it.

Past champions have gone on to rather serious things. Some have become doctors. Some have become lawyers. A few have become enormously disappointing. The Cup does not discriminate. The Cup merely remembers.

The Reward

The Purse

$500

Awarded, in full, to the winning team.

Who May Enter

I.

Any Yale Student

Undergraduate, graduate, professional — if your ID opens a gate on Old Campus, your paddle is welcome at our table.

II.

Any Residential College

You need not live at Branford to compete for the Branford Cup. You need only live with dignity, and strike with purpose.

III.

Any Level of Skill

Novices have taken the Cup. Prodigies have fallen. The bracket cares nothing for your self-assessment.

The Proceedings

Format of Play

I

Doubles Teams

Teams of two. Choose your partner carefully — the Cup has ended friendships before and it will do so again.

II

Seeded Bracket

A single-elimination draw, seeded by the Committee according to entirely defensible criteria.

III

Best of Three

Games to 21, win by two. Serve alternates every five. Standard international rules, enforced rigorously.

IV

The Final

Best of five. Played before a live gallery. Regrettable celebrations are both expected and encouraged.

A Gentleman's Diversion

The Parlor

For those not content merely to watch — a house of friendly wager. Every spectator who signs on receives a welcome purse of 1,000 Branford Bucks, to be staked upon matches, predictions, and the full draw of the bracket.

I

Match Wagers

Stake your Bucks on any open match. The house keeps nothing; the pool is divided among the winners in proportion to their stake.

II

The Oracle's Bracket

One entry of 100 Bucks, predict the full draw before Round One. Points accrue by round. Top three oracles split the pot.

III

Propositions

The Committee posts side-wagers as the tournament unfolds — will the Final go five? Will a Branford team take the Cup?

Branford Bucks bear no monetary value whatsoever. This is a gentleman's ledger — for sport, banter, and bragging rights only.

Matters of Common Inquiry

Frequently Asked

Is the $500 real?

Yes. Five crisp Benjamins, or the digital equivalent thereof, delivered to the winning team with a handshake and a firm nod.

Do I need to be good at ping pong?

No. You need to be willing. Competence is a bonus and, in some cases, a disadvantage.

Do I need to live in Branford College?

No. The Cup bears our name, but the table is open. Any Yale student may enter.

Do I need to bring my own paddle?

Paddles shall be provided. You are, however, strongly encouraged to bring your own — a player and their paddle are not lightly separated.

What if my partner drops out?

Find another. The Committee is sympathetic, but unmoved.

Are the Branford Bucks in the Parlor worth real money?

No. Not a cent. They exist purely for the sport of it — a house currency for friendly wager among spectators. No cash changes hands, no winnings are paid out, and the Committee will entertain no correspondence on the point.

Do I have to bet in the Parlor to enter the tournament?

Absolutely not. Official tournament entry is by the Google Form above, and that alone. The Parlor is a separate diversion for those who care to watch with a stake in the outcome.
